In October, a 17 foot scale model of a Jenkins Creek scrape boat wascompeted and installed in the Center by Larry Marsh. Larry and his father built her at their L.Marsh Boatyard in Rhodes Point.

She immediately became a favorite of the Island and waspronounced "pretty as a piece of candy" by Terry Laird and others. When Larry asked us whatname he should put on her, we had to come up with a plan for choosing a name and homeport. The Board of Directors chose Smith Island as the homeport and decided to have a contest toname the boat with a prize of $100 to the winner and one year free Alliance membership forhonorable mentions.

Contest forms were placed in stores and post offices on the Island and, inJanuary, Dana Evans presented the Board of Directors with 64 entries. After several votes, theBoard chose Island Jewel, submitted by Heather Whealton, as the winner. Honorable mentionswere awarded to: Kathleen Marshall for Pride of the Island, Gladstone Tyler, Jr. for IslandPride, Debbie Evans for Island Pride and Missy Evans for Barcat. Thank you to all the Islanderswho participated in the contest.
